After years of research, we have found that the best way to control scorpions is to dust the attic of a building with diatomaceous earth. Diatomaceous earth is the remains of microscopic phytoplankton, similar to coral, found in prehistoric freshwater sea beds. DE is ground to a talcum like consistency. When an insect comes in contact with DE it sticks to its oily exoskeleton and absorbs the oil. DE then cuts into the insect’s joints, as ground glass would to us and allows body fluids to escape. We have found that this treatment may need to be done each spring. The treatment is normally effective on the day that it is applied. DE applied to a pets bedding and living area (pen), will control fleas, ticks, and fire ants. Put DE in an animal’s food, 1-2 % by weight, it controls parasites in the animal’s gut. Fly larvae cannot live in the animal droppings, so we also have fly control after a while. Horses, cattle, sheep, goats, dogs, cats, ostriches, chickens, pigs, deer, and any critter that walks on the face of the earth will be healthier and feel better. This can be done when the feed is stored and there will be no loss by insects in storage. We as humans eat a lot of DE as inert ingredients in baked goods and vitamins as trace minerals. I dusted DE on a scorpion a few years ago and in fifteen minutes he was affected. The animals have healthier coats, better weight gain, clearer eyes and an absence of parasites in their stools. Chickens have an improvement of the death rate and increase egg laying. In one test of dairy cattle, there was a 20% increase of milk production, without an increase in feed. There were no new cases of mastitis. DE is approximately 3% magnesium, 86% silicon, 5% sodium, 2% iron and contains many other trace minerals such as titanium, boron, manganese, copper and zirconium.
